Tuned Mass Damper
A Tuned Mass Damper (TMD) is a vibration control device that uses a precisely configured mass, spring, and damping system to reduce horizontal and vertical vibrations in buildings caused by wind, earthquakes, mechanical equipment, or human activity.
In high-rise buildings, vibration issues affect not only structural safety but also occupant comfort. WELL-LINK provides a comprehensive one-stop service encompassing measurement of the structure’s natural frequencies, dynamic analysis, damper design and manufacturing, on-site installation and tuning, and performance verification. This ensures that the TMD is properly matched to the actual characteristics of the structure and delivers stable and effective vibration reduction.
[Enhanced Comfort] [Structural Vibration Control] [Comprehensive Performance Verification]
Description
The operating principle of the TMD consists in tuning its mass, spring, and damping system so that its natural frequency matches the structure’s dominant vibration frequency. When the structure vibrates due to external excitation, the TMD oscillates in the opposite direction, thereby reducing the amplitude of the structure’s vibration.
01 | Precise Frequency Tuning
The TMD is designed according to the structure’s dominant vibration frequency to absorb vibration energy by oscillating in the opposite direction, thereby reducing structural oscillations.
02 | Enhanced Occupant Comfort
Effectively reduces discomfort caused by vibrations in high-rise buildings, long-span floors, bridges, and mechanical equipment.
03 | Modular Configuration
Can be custom-designed according to the building conditions and available installation space, minimizing the impact on usable space.
04 | Integrated One-Stop Service
Encompasses measurement, analysis, manufacturing, installation, tuning, and functional verification to ensure effective vibration reduction.
・High-Rise Residential Buildings, Hotels, and Office Buildings: Occupants on upper floors are particularly sensitive to wind-induced sway. TMDs can turn enhanced occupant comfort into a key differentiator that strengthens the value proposition of premium real estate developments.
・Slender Towers and Structures with Special Architectural Forms: Structures with high aspect ratios are susceptible to periodic oscillations caused by vortex-induced vibration. TMDs can be tuned to specific vibration modes, enabling landmark structures to remain both tall and stable.
・Long-Span Bridges and Floor Systems: TMDs can reduce resonance peaks caused by rhythmic pedestrian loads or mechanical vibrations, improving the perceived safety of bridges, performance spaces, and industrial building floors.
Q: How is a TMD different from a conventional damper?
A: A TMD is tuned to the structure’s dominant vibration frequency. When vibration occurs, the TMD oscillates in the opposite direction to absorb vibration energy, providing a significantly greater vibration reduction effect at the target frequency than non-tuned damping devices.
Q: Can a TMD be installed in an existing building?
A: Yes. After a professional engineer assesses the structural safety, on-site frequency measurements are conducted to determine the building’s vibration characteristics. The installation location and TMD mass configuration are then designed accordingly, without requiring major modifications to the existing structure.
